Why RI Homeowners are Removing Their Oil Tank

Today, homeowners are removing their oil tanks for a few common reasons:

Rhode Island has one of the highest concentrations of oil-heated homes in the country. Decades of affordable heating oil kept old heating oil tanks in the basements, garages and utility rooms across the state. From triple-deckers of Providence to the colonials in South Kingston.

  • Selling Your Home: Nearly all real estate agents and home inspectors will flag an aging oil tank. Buyers don’t want the liability.  More than half of our work comes from home sales. We can usually get your tank out within days — well before your closing date.
  • Converting To Gas or Electric Heat Pumps: Once you switch heating systems, that old tank is dead weight. It’s also a liability if it leaks. Removing it now costs $650. Cleaning up a spill later costs thousands.
  • Failed Inspections: If an inspector flagged your tank’s condition, you need it out — not patched. We’ll remove it and provide the paperwork you need to close the issue and get your project back on track.
  • Tank Too Old: Most residential oil tanks last 15–20 years. If yours is past that, it’s a ticking clock. Oil leaking onto your basement floor or into the ground creates environmental liability that falls on you as the homeowner.
  • Reclaiming Space: a 275-gallon steel oil tank takes up a lot of room. Removing it opens up usable square footage in your basement or garage.

Whatever your reason, the process is straightforward and in Rhode Island, no permit is required for above-ground residential oil tank removal.

What Homeowners Actually Say About Us

Fully insured and trusted by homeowners across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

Everything went perfectly. My oil tank and fill pipes were all removed without any issues considering my house is over 100 years old with lower than normal ceilings and steeper stairs. Thank you for doing a terrific job. Very professional and did everything that was promised at the quoted price. Thanks again!

Rhode Island Oil Tank Removal: Regulations and Requirements

Good News: Rhode Island does not require a permit for above-ground residential oil tank removal. No fire department notification. No municipal paperwork. You call us, we schedule it and its done. We will however provide paperwork of professional removal and disposal for you records.

That said, there are still standards that need to be followed:
  • Oil disposal  is handled in full compliance with RIDEM (Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management) guidelines. Every gallon is accounted for and disposed of properly.
  • We are fully insured: general liability and workers’ compensation. Our coverage protects your property and our crew throughout the job.
  • Asbestos wrapped tanks: Occasionally old oil tanks will be wrapped in asbestos. We do not remove asbestos. The asbestos would need to be properly abated before we are able to remove the oil tank.
  • Oil Leaks & Spills: If your oil tank has leaked, thats a different situation from a standard removal depending on the scope. We’ll assess what we see on site or from photos and advise you on the next steps. Standard removal pricing applies to standard removals and does not include oil spill cleanup that happened prior to our arrival.
  • No permit or red tape. Just a clean, professional removal handled by a crew that’s done this over 10,000 times.
