Why Massachusetts Homeowners Remove Their Oil Tanks
Most homeowners don’t wake up thinking about their oil tank. Until one of three things happen:
- Selling Your Home: Your home inspector flags the oil tank. Your buyer’s lender wants it gone before closing. You need it handled fast — not in weeks, not with back-and-forth estimates. You need a crew that shows up, removes it, and hands you the documentation your attorney needs.
- You’re Converting To Gas: You made the switch. Your gas company installed the new system. But they don’t remove the old tank — that’s on you. And your oil company isn’t coming back for it either.
- Insurance Company Requirement: Some Massachusetts insurers won’t renew coverage on homes with inactive or disconnected oil tanks. If you’ve received that letter, you already know the clock is ticking.
Whatever the reason may be for removing your tank, the process is straightforward. Jacobs Property Solutions handles the permit, cutting, pumping, disposal and documentation.

I received a return call almost immediately and the process was explained clearly. Other companies took 3 to 5 days to respond. Norman and his crew were professional, friendly and informative. The removal took less time than I anticipated and the area was left clean. I would recommend them without reservation.
We had a leaking oil tank which needed to be removed promptly. The owner and his team communicated regularly before our appointment and were very responsive. On the day of our appointment they were on time, worked quickly and we had no issues. Thank you for making this so easy!!
Absolute wonderful company to do business with. Communication was very impressive. The removal of my oil tank was a quick in and out, no mess, no problems. On a scale from 1-10, I’d give a 10. And I would highly recommend them.

Massachusetts Oil Tank Removal: Regulations, Requirements & Permits
Massachusetts requires a permit for every above ground oil tank removal: Here’s what that means for you…..nothing! We handle the entire permit process for you. We will take care of the entire oil tank removal process and file the permit with your local fire department on your behalf. We also provide paperwork of professional removal and disposal for you records. Permit fees are set by the local fire department and are separate from your removal fee.
Some common permit fees listed below:
- Worcester, MA $50
- New Bedford, MA $75
- Fall River, MA $50
- Attleboro, MA $50
- Brockton, MA $55
- Boston. MA $100
Not all tank removal situations are the same:
- We are fully insured: general liability and workers’ compensation. Our coverage protects your property and our crew throughout the job.
- Asbestos wrapped tanks: Occasionally old oil tanks will be wrapped in asbestos. We do not remove asbestos. The asbestos would need to be properly abated before we are able to remove the oil tank.
- Oil Leaks & Spills: If your oil tank has leaked, that’s a different situation from a standard removal depending on the scope. We’ll assess what we see on site or from photos and advise you on the next steps. Standard removal pricing applies to standard removals and does not include oil spill cleanup that happened prior to our arrival.
Cities We Serve In Massachusetts
Worcester, MA
We’ve removed hundreds of oil tanks across Worcester — from Main South to Burncoat, Tatnuck to Green Island. Worcester permit fee is $50, and we handle all the filing with the Building Department. Many Worcester homeowners call us when they’re converting from oil to gas or selling older homes in the neighborhoods west of downtown.
New Bedford, MA
New Bedford’s housing stock runs heavy on 1940s–1960s capes and ranches, many with basement oil tanks. Permit fee is $75, filed through the New Bedford Fire Department at 895 Brock Avenue. We serve every neighborhood from the North End to Dartmouth line.
Fall River, MA
Fall River has some of the densest multi-family housing in southeastern MA — triple-deckers and duplexes with tanks in tight basements. We handle permits and have done extensive work across the Flint, Maplewood, and Highland neighborhoods.
Attleboro, MA
Attleboro and North Attleboro are a quick run from our Warwick base. We serve both towns regularly, including the neighborhoods around Route 1 and South Attleboro.
Brockton, MA
Brockton’s older housing stock — especially the Campello and Montello neighborhoods — means a lot of oil tanks still in basements. We file your permit and handle everything.
Boston Suburbs
We serve the southern and western Boston suburbs including Quincy, Braintree, Weymouth, Milton, Dedham, Norwood, and Canton. If you’re inside Route 128 and south of the Pike, we’re there.
Taunton, MA
Taunton and Raynham are in our core service area. Older neighborhoods near downtown Taunton are where we see the most oil tank removal demand.
Plymouth / South Shore
We serve Plymouth, Marshfield, Pembroke, and surrounding South Shore communities. Many homeowners in this area are removing tanks as part of real estate transactions.
